Licensing

Use this page to understand Turbo Server licensing options and requirements for server roles and applications.

What You'll Learn

  • Available Turbo Server license models
  • How activation states affect license usage
  • RDS licensing requirements for application servers
  • Options for enforcing application licenses

Turbo Server License

The standard Turbo Server license, Turbo Server Enterprise Edition, supports named or simultaneous end-user licensing and allows you to host unlimited applications. Administrators can activate or deactivate users from the administration site and upgrade capacity as needed.

See Managing Users and Authentication for user management and Domain Settings for applying new licenses.

Named User Licensing

Named user licenses limit the total number of active users. Each user has an activation state:

Activation StateOccupies LicenseCan Launch ApplicationsCan Login
ActiveYesYesYes
InactiveNoYes (transitions to Active)Yes
DisabledNoNoNo

Initial activation depends on how the user is created:

  • SSO users start as active.
  • Azure AD synchronization and anonymous logins start as inactive.
  • Internal users can be set to the desired activation state at creation.

Inactive users become active when they run an application or when an admin activates them. Users automatically reset to inactive if they are over 30 days old and have not launched an application in over 30 days. Administrators and system users are not automatically deactivated.

RDS License

Servers with the Application role must have RDS licensing configured; see the Microsoft documentation. RDS Per User CALs are not supported with the default Temporary Profile login mode because temporary profiles use local non-Active Directory users. Use RDS Per Device CALs when you use Temporary Profile login mode.

Application License

Application licenses can be enforced by the application itself (for example, a license server) or by Turbo administrative settings. Turbo allows you to limit concurrent and named users or devices per application. See Workspace Applications for configuration details.
